Today we studied an informative text about youth and spending. We focused on how an author uses textual features to help his/her reader.
Block One: We reviewed how to annotate and practiced on our own. Then we worked in groups on a collaborative discussion of questions 6-8 on page 92. Homework: NBTT: 110-120 Springboard: page 92 Check Your Understanding Blocks Two and Four: We did a close reading of the text and answered the key questions and ideas. Then we participated in a RAN strategy of collaborative learning. Students asked each other Socratic questions to challenge general statements about the text. Today we went over text features and read an informative text (pages 94-96), looking at two things: First, how the text features helped the writer develop his/her main ideas. Second, how advertising affects youth. We then worked in collaborative groups and used the app Clip Champ to record our discussions of questions 4-6 in SpringBoard page 96.
Your homework is page 96 Check Your Understanding. Your response should be an organized paragraph (topic sentence, transition, supporting information, commentary, and concluding statement). I will collect these for a grade tomorrow. I want to assess where we are in our understanding of text features and their role in informative texts.
NBTT: 120-130

BLOCK FOUR INSTRUCTIONS:
You are writing a thorough paragraph contrasting the video and the article from yesterday. If you need to rewatch the video, the link is above under December 9. Your paragraph should maintain the following outline:
Topic Sentence: The video and the article present similar information, but _______________________________.
Supporting Information about the video
Commentary about that supporting information (why did they present it this way/how does this difference help or hurt the video?)
Transition (on the other hand, in contrast, etc)
Supporting information about the article
Commentary about the article
Concluding Sentence
When finished, upload to google classroom under contrast paragraph. Then, complete the syntax chart on the desk regarding your paragraph. You will turn that in on Monday.
Extra time? Locate two sources for your research topic. If you found one at the library already, you only need to find one more. Compare and contrast on a google doc the two sources using RAFT (page 114 of SpringBoard). This does not need to be in paragraph form. Upload that to google classroom under RAFT.
More time? Read pages 126-127 in SpringBoard and annotate. Highlight the things you feel you need more information or more practice with.
Homework: If you did not in class, find two sources for your expository essay.
