Class debate: informal grade for quarter three
February 2- February 3
Unit 2 test will be given on February 4. This will be a formal grade for quarter three. We will spend two days reviewing for the test, covering all information from Unit 2 of SpringBoard. Specifically, we will focus on:
-how to determine an author's main argument
-how an author connects ideas to the main argument
-how an author uses reasoning, or logos, to support a claim
-how an author uses pathos to support a claim
-how an author uses organization to support his or her message
-how to determine purpose in a text
- how to read graphs and determine their purpose
We will also focus a bit on test taking strategies for reading and reading comprehension.
Your homework will be to study for the test.

Today is primarily a rehearsal day for blended learning and our group stations. If we have time, we will begin Springboard activity 3.2. Our focus on 3.2 is imagery and motifs.
February 16
Today is a review day of the lessons 3.3-3.4. Since you did these without me, I want to take a day to be sure we all understood the concepts of mood, atmosphere, and setting, as well as our double entry journal expectations. Finally, we will look at your paragraph. We will evaluate an example paragraph and then compare yours to the example. You may feel at the end of class that you would like to rewrite your paragraph in light of the lesson. Definitely do so. Turn it in onto google classroom by tomorrow, Wednesday.
Homework:
Record in your DEJ an instance of a flashback, foreshadowing, and characterization. You should read through page 50 of Tangerine.

Today we look at lesson 3.5 in SpringBoard. We examined how an author uses foreshadowing, flashbacks, and characterization to help develop his or her plot. For characterization, we specifically looked at the actions, appearance, thoughts, and words of a character, and how those elements help reveal what characters are like. This information will be invaluable to you for your EA 1, Literary Analysis assignment. If you missed this class, I recommend coming to tutoring Thursday at 8am. Tomorrow we will use this information to compare and contrast two characters in Tangerine, so be sure your double entry journal is updated.
Homework: Make sure 3.5 if complete before you come to class tomorrow. You should read through September 6 (page 55) for tomorrow.
