Today we took the Unit One Assessment. We will go over the test tomorrow. We also started our first day of the third set of stems. I have attached the document below. Be sure you make flashcards for these stems by tomorrow. Also, be reading and updating your role. Your last Lit Circle for this novel is on Friday. You will have a formal grade Socratic Seminar over this novel on Monday.

November 4
Today we reviewed the test and discussed our first three test taking strategies. If you were absent, I can give these to you before or after class. For homework, you were to catch up on reading and lit circle role. Final Lit Circle is Friday!

Today we reviewed syntax. Attached you will find the syntax chart we used. If you were absent, you can come to my tutoring on Thursdays at 8am and I can go over syntax with you. For homework, you need to finish your lit circle role and finish the novel. Tomorrow is your last lit circle. Your formal assignment for this novel is a Socratic Seminar in which you will be expected to participate in a discussion about the book. I will be asking a few questions and grading each student on his or her participation. I have attached the questions for The Outsiders and a separate document for Animal Farm. Use the correct one for your class.

Today we completed the vocab worksheet below on a separate sheet of paper (answers only). We then went over the first half of 2.2 in SpringBoard. We learned about text features, specifically. Be sure you have a good grasp of text features. We answered questions 1-3 on page 89.

Today we had our first Lit Circle. We will have a comprehension quiz on Monday (Nothing But the Truth pages 1-40 and The Pearl chapters 1-3). We completed a sheet with guided questions to be sure we are understanding the novel. These questions will help you with your comprehension quiz on Monday.
We also wen to the library for a lesson on analyzing advertisements. Ms. Price shared a website with you regarding advertisements.

Today we took a comprehension quiz regarding our novel reading. If you were absent, see me when you return, and you can make it up. For homework: look up your favorite advertisement and upload it to my google classroom Advertisement assignment. You can copy/paste it as a link when you go to "add." Study the advertisement and know which techniques it is using. You will present this to the class, so be ready!

Today we wrote an expository essay. We first reviewed a sample of one from the commercial I showed yesterday. We used scrible to help us annotate this essay. Tomorrow you will write your own expository essay in class. For homework:

Today we reviewed the elements of the expository essay playing Salta y Grita. Then we began to write our own expository sample essay on our advertisement. This essay is an informal grade and should be at least four paragraphs. I provided a sheet to help guide our way (it is attached here). For homework: Lit Circle Tomorrow! NBTT: pages 40-90 The Pearl: Chps. 4-6. On Monday we will peer review our expository essay, so over the weekend you will finish that up.

We also continued to look at advertising, specifically how we are influenced by advertising. The students answered questions on pages 104-105 of their Springboard with a partner. They then participated in a fishbowl to share their answers. A fishbowl will be part of their grade for the embedded assessment, so this was good practice.
